The Samsung SCX-4216F is a very similar printer and provides Mac drivers… So i tested this driver instead and it works fine!

Simply go to the Samsung website and download the Mac driver for model SCX-4216F. Install on your Mac. Attach your X215 printer but use the SCX-4×16F drivers. Printing works fine.

I haven’t tested whether scanning works yet - the X215 uses standard TWAIN so might work but I haven’t found time to test it yet.

There are some very interesting and innovative ideas being developed over the 10 week project development cycle. At week 10, all startups will present their software products in a series of presentations. The aim is that after 10 weeks the products reach an investable stage.

We’re only at week 6 and i’ve learnt a huge amount through the process. Collaborating with other startups and being able to bounce ideas around really helps me focus. http://bootcycle.com

This morning the internet is full of news announcing that Skype will launch on the iPhone. I’ve been using Skype everyday (skype:andrewgill73?call) for many years and must have spent hundreds of hours using it…

So I’d really welcome a Skype client on a Smart Phone even if it just works on wi-fi networks for now. I’m currently a blackberry user so when will Skype announce a Blackberry client? Surely if Skype has delivered an application for iPhone why not Blackberry and other smartphones?

I had always assumed that the slow uptake from Skype (and other VOIP providers) to build applications for smart phones was because of pressure from the networks to protect their valuable voice revenue streams. However, now that Skype is launching for iPhone it signals an end to this protectionism!

VAT changes announced yesterday by the government will actually result in many small businesses being worse off, not better.

Thousands of small businesses on the VAT flat rate scheme (FRS) pay a fixed rate of VAT to the Inland Revenue. In many cases, these rates have not dropped by the full 2.5% reduction and result in small businesses being worse off. This is the opposite of what the government says it’s trying to do.

For example, an innovative business in the IT sector has a handful of employees - before 1st December they charged customers 17.5% and paid the Inland Revenue 13% on the flat rate scheme. This was a 4.5% saving that helped the service industry compete with low cost competition from countries such as India. After 1st December the same company will charge customers 15% and pay the Inland Revenue 11.5%. The saving is now 3.5%. This is a reduction of 1% for small businesses at a time that the government is saying that it’s actually helping small businesses.

This is not a “one off” either - it’s happened on orders for iMacs and iPods too… Apple say it’s because of the custom configuration options but all these products are standard config so this cannot be true.

I’ve been looking into joining a new Gym here in central Brighton recently. I’ve been stung in the past so have these top tips:

1) All Gyms give you a free gym visit to help you decide whether to join… always visit the gym on the day of the week and time you’d normally expect to visit. This way you’ll see how busy it will be when you’re there.

2) The sales staff are often on sales commission/bonuses or similar incentives so will promise you the world even if they cannot deliver. So always read the small print in the contract. I joined Esporta Gym who forgot to mention a 3 month cancellation period!

3) Try to join a Gym in October or any unpopular months - you get the best deals because fewest people join the Gym during off-peak months. The most popular time to join is New Year.

4) Don’t be fooled by free gifts and promotions. A free towel or gym bag is just a gimic.

5) Check out health insurance deals. Many health insurance providers such as Pruhealth and Bupa give free or discounted memberships. It is possible to get free Gym membership through Pruhealth if you meet certain criteria.

French newspaper Libération has research that some new Mac Pros are emitting a strong smell that is toxic and potentially fatal to humans.

Annie Leszkowicz, a chemical risks expert from the French agency, told Libération:

“Benzene can affect bone marrow. Imagine if a person worked eight hours per day for two months breathing in these vapors, some people could very well develop leukemia”

If you own a Mac Pro and smell any unusual vapours then contact Apple immediately and open the window !!
